Cameroon was a German colony until World War I, when it was divided between France and Britain. It gained independence from France in 1960 and merged with the southern part of British Cameroon to form the Federal Republic of Cameroon. Despite some political instability and a movement toward democracy, Cameroon has experienced relative stability that has supported economic development and infrastructure growth.
